The Community Table

You are invited to a special evening honoring the community and iconic Forest Queen of the 1970’s. We will gather to celebrate, share stories, and explore how and why this special place in Crested Butte had the impact it did on so many people.

A Cherished Story

It is a time embedded in the minds of all where were there, and cherished for the authentic and wild search for unbridled freedom. A diverse set of creative people arrived in Crested Butte to find their life’s grail, and many found it in a beautiful, though complex, mountain community.

The evening will be hosted by family members James and Betty, who lived and worked as part of the ownership group. Founder Barry (still traveling the West with Betty), Thelma, and others will be there in spirit.

The stage setting will depict the inside of the Queen of the time, and the first act of The Community Table, written by James Foreman will be read and presented.

The Production & Creation of the Event

As I was talking to my mom, Betty, one day this past Spring, we could think of no better place for a gathering and project, than in Crested Butte, where our lives took a huge turn 50 years ago. The special experience we had then is still possible today.

By telling and learning from our stories we can enliven community cooperation in 2024 and beyond. This evening will be a time to say hello for the first time, or even goodbye for the last time. Together we can do so much.

James Foreman

After moving to Crested Butte in the 4th grade I found my element while acting in Mountain Theatre productions of Tennessee Williams’ play Summer and Smoke, directed by Eric Ross, and children productions of Urishima Taro, and the ghost in The Ghost of Canterville Hall. I went on to graduate from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, in Pasadena California. I also worked at Universal Studios, Gower Studios in Hollywood, and performed as an actor, dancer, and choreographer in L.A. and the San Francisco Bay Area. I now live in Sonoma, CA doing projects of all kinds.

Betty Bailey

Betty fell in love with Crested Butte, and Forest Queen founder Barry, while visiting Crested Butte in the 1970’s. She then retired early as a Minnesota High School Teacher, and moved James and his sister Dee to Crested Butte. After selling all their properties in the mid 80’s Barry and Betty went off the grid to hike, camp, sail, and eventually run the food service for NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School). Barry and Betty continue their outdoor living in the mountains and canyons of the West. Betty is the advisor and wise educator for all projects.
